Marriage is a sacred bond and the most beautiful Halal relationship between a man and woman instituted by Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. It is a promise to a forever, loving companionship, the yearning of which is placed in each of our hearts by the Almighty Himself.
The Quran regards the relationship between a wife and a husband as the purest form of love, and the several verses embedded in the Holy Book are enough to show us the importance of marriage.
Here are 8 verses from the Holy Quran defining the beauty of marriage:
1- Marriage Is a Recommended Deed
“And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allāh will enrich them from His bounty, and Allāh is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” – [An-Nur: 32]
2- Find Comfort In Your Spouse
“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.” – [Ar-Rum: 21]
3- Be Each Other’s Garment
“They are a clothing for you and you are a clothing for them.” – [Al-Baqarah: 187]
4- Every Soul Shares a Bond
“It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he might dwell in security with her.” – [Al-A’raf: 189]
5- Show Kindness to Your Wife
“O you who have believed, it is not lawful for you to inherit women by compulsion. And do not make difficulties for them in order to take [back] part of what you gave them unless they commit a clear immorality [i.e., adultery]. And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allāh makes therein much good.” – [An-Nisa: 19]
6- Each Spouse Has a Role Assigned to Them
“Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allāh has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allāh would have them guard.” – [An-Nisa: 34]
7- Honor Your Bond In Marriage
“O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allāh, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allāh is ever, over you, an Observer.” – [An-Nisa: 1]
8- The Essence of Marriage
“And those who say, "Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us a leader [i.e., example] for the righteous." Those will be awarded the Chamber1 for what they patiently endured, and they will be received therein with greetings and [words of] peace.” – [Al-Furqan: 74-75]
Marriage is a sacred bond woven together with love, kindness, companionship, compassion, and support. The Quran encourages spouses to treat each other with fairness, love, and respect. Ultimately, a secure and happy relationship can only be achieved with mutual commitment, as you respect each other’s rights and have sincerity in your intentions and efforts.
