3 Islamic Tips to Control Your Anger

Being unable to keep our anger in check can be a destructive quality to possess, considering that it impacts all involved parties in one way or another.

As Muslims, we must learn how to control our emotions so we don’t inflict unnecessary damage onto ourselves and others around us.

Here are 3 Islamic tips we can practice to manage our anger better and eliminate the sense of helplessness that usually tags along with it:

1- Turn Away and Maintain Silence

Shaytan tempts us to say and do things in anger that we are sure to regret afterward. That’s why our religion teaches us to maintain silence, turn away from the other person, and drink some water to calm ourselves down.

2- Make Wudu and Seek Refuge From Allah (SWT)

Instead of surrendering to our anger, we must also try deviating our mind. The best way to do that is by performing Wudu and asking Allah (SWT) for self-restraint.

Here’s the Dua we can recite to control our anger better:

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطانِ الرَّجِيْمِ

"I seek refuge with Allah against Satan, the outcast." - (Abu Dawud: 4781, Al-Bukhari: 6115)

3- Remember the Rewards

Indeed, Allah (SWT) loves those who control their tongues and make reconciliation. Just remembering that we will be rewarded handsomely in this life and the Hereafter for controlling our anger can be enough to calm our mind.

Therefore, before uttering any word in anger, let’s give ourselves a moment to recentralize our thoughts and contemplate the consequences of our actions.

May Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala grant us patience and keep us safe from the delusion of Shaytan. Ameen.
