20 Authentic Facts About the Holy Qur'an

The Holy Qur’an is the Book of Allah SWT recited by Muslims worldwide. It is the sacred scripture of Islam, carrying the message of mercy, hope, forgiveness, and peace for all mankind. 


In other words, the Qur’an Majeed is specifically dedicated to human beings so they can lead their life according to the Islamic teachings. The verses in the Holy Qur’an are directed towards us as we are taught the code of life by the one and only Divine Power Himself.


“Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.” – [Al Hijr: 9]



AL-QUR'AN FACTS


There are countless interesting facts about the Holy Qur’an and its revelation. Here are a few authentic ones to learn if you’re looking to enhance your knowledge about the Beloved Book of Allah:


1- The Word “Qur'an”


  • The literal meaning of the word Qur’an is “that which is being read.”

  • The word “Qur'an” is repeated 70 times in the Book of Allah itself.


2- Number of Surahs In the Qur'an


The total number of verses in the Qur'an varies according to different scholars:


  • Abdullah Ibn-e-Abbas (R.A.): 6616 Verses

  • Uqba Ibn Nafi (R.A.): 6217 Verses

  • Shayba bin Uthman (R.A.): 6214 Verses

  • Scholars of Egypt: 6226 Verses

  • Al-Zamahshari: 6666 Verses

  • People of Al-Kufa: 6236 Verses


3- Juz/ Chapters/ Sections In the Qur’an


The Holy Qur'an has a total of 30 juz/ chapters/ sections. 


4- Total Surahs In the Qur’an


There are 114 Surahs in the Holy Qur'an, starting from Surah Al-Fatihah, and ending on Surah An-Nas.


5- Rukus and Sujood


There are a total of 558 Rukus and 14 Sujood (prostration) delineated in the Holy Book of Allah.


6- Longest/ Shortest Surah In the Qur'an


Surah Baqarah (2nd chapter) is the longest Surah and Surah Kawthar (108th chapter) is the shortest Surah in the Qur'an Majeed.


7- Different Labels for Surahs


  • Surah Al-Fatihah (1st chapter) is also referred to as the “Mother of Quran” or “Preface of Qur'an.”

  • Surah Yaseen (36th chapter) is referred to as the “Heart of Qur'an.”

  • Surah Rehman (55th chapter) is referred to as the “Beauty of Qur'an.”


8- The ‘Bismillah’ Count


  • Surah Al-Tawba (9th chapter) is the only Surah in the Qur'an not to start with Bismillah.

  • Surah An-Naml (27th chapter) is the only Surah in which 'Bismillah' appears twice in Verse# 30.


9- Surah Revealed Twice


Surah Al-Fatihah (1st chapter) is the only Surah in the Holy Qur’an to be revealed twice.


10- Longest/Shortest Verse in Qur'an


  • Verse# 282 of Surah Al-Baqarah (2nd chapter) is the longest verse in the Holy Qur'an.

  • Verse# 64 of Surah Ar-Rahman (55th chapter) is the shortest verse in the Holy Qur'an.


11- Arabic Letters and Words In the Qur'an


  • The Arabic letter used maximum times in the Qur'an is: "Alif" (ا)

  • The Arabic letter used fewest times in the Qur'an is: "Zaa" (ز)

  • The longest word to be used in the Qur'an is: " فَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمُوهُ ". It is a part of verse# 22 of Surah Al-Hijr (15th chapter).


12- Prophets Mentioned In the Qur'an


  • In total, 25 Prophets are mentioned in the Holy Qur'an in different Surahs.

  • Prophet Moosa (A.S.) is mentioned 136 times in the Qur'an, making him the most mentioned Prophets of all In the Holy Book of Allah.


13- Number of Surahs Revealed In Makkah and Madina


  • The number of Surahs revealed in Makkah are 86. These are called Makki Surahs.

  • The number of Surahs revealed in Madina are 28. These are called Madni Surahs.


14- The Qur’an Revelation


The Holy Qur'an was first revealed in the month of Ramadan. It took over 23 years to complete the full revelation in Mecca & Medina.


15- Ghazwas Described In the Qur'an


A total of 12 Ghazwas are described in the Qur'an. Ghazwas are battles in which our Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) participated.


16- Animals Mentioned In the Qur'an


  • Biggest animal to be mentioned in the Qur'an is an "Elephant."

  • Smallest animal to be mentioned in the Qur'an is a "Mosquito."


17- Only Month Mentioned In the Qur'an


‘Ramadan’ is the only month mentioned in the Qur'an, in verse# 185 of Surah Al-Baqarah (2nd chapter).


18- Best Drink Mentioned In the Qur'an


‘Milk’ is the best drink, according to the Qur'an, mentioned in verse# 66 of Surah Al-Nahal (16th chapter).


19- Female Mentioned In Qur'an


Maryam (A.S.) is the only female name mentioned in the Qur'an, in verse# 87 of Surah Al-Baqarah (2nd chapter).


20- Sahabi Mentioned In Qur'an


Zayd Ibn Haarithah (R.A.) is the only Sahabi to be mentioned in the Qur'an, in verse# 37 of Surah Al-Ahzab (33rd chapter).



Indeed, the knowledge we find in the Holy Qur'an is indisputable. Even the facts revealed in the Holy Book of Allah have been scientifically proven time and again, and no one can refute the divine wisdom lying behind the verses of the Qur'an.
